Get Rid of Holiday Stress Once and for All
Hint: two words.
Hmm…
You know the holidays are predictable, right?
So, why not turn that faux-celebratory stress and anxiety on its conspicuously consumeristic and over-the-top ass by trying to be less.
That’s right.
When others drink too much, eat too much, spend too much, and complain too much–why not commit to something different?
Second hint: Too.
Think of this as a new family tradition.
Even if you’re the only practicing member.
Final hint: Much.
And the antidotes for Too and Much?
Exactly.
To and Do.
As in To Do something different from complex, loud, and shallow.
Something simple, quiet, and profound.
Let others succumb to dysfunctional family history, maxed-out VISA accounts, and rum-spiked eggnog hangovers.
Not you, baby.
You’re going for new, fresh, and guaranteed, when jumpstarting those godforsaken New Year’s Resolutions.
Check out this simple, quiet, yet powerful poem shared by the lovely Cherry Woodburn of BorderlessThinking.com.
Because YOU CAN rewrite your holiday story and those exhausting patterns, family dynamics and anxious thoughts by following the beauty and simplicity of the following:
AUTOBIOGRAPHY IN FIVE SHORT CHAPTERS~by Portia Nelson
Chapter I
I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in.
I am lost … I am helpless.
It isn’t my fault.
It takes me forever to find a way out.
Chapter II
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don’t see it.
I fall in again.
I can’t believe I am in the same place.
But, it isn’t my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.
Chapter III
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
I still fall in … it’s a habit.
My eyes are open.
I know where I am.
It is my fault.
I get out immediately.
Chapter IV
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.
Chapter V
I walk down another street.

Oh I like this!
My holiday street name or more like motto is:
Detour Road. Turn left away from the drama. Look straight ahead and find the good in people and the holiday spirit.
Love the creativity Beth!
Super! I remember reading that poem on Borderless thinking.
Different Avenue. Do one thing different alas Bill O’Hanlon.
I like yours Beth!

Okay, I need to google Bill O’Hanlon, Irene!
Yes!
The name of my avenue = My Path… not to be mistaken with your path, or their paths or his path or that other, obnoxious, busy, all-too-consuming, credit-card maxing, wine-guzzling, exchange-all-the-crappy-presents, buy-obligatory-gifts path.
Yay!

Definitely taking a U-turn when I approach Highway to Holiday Hell.
Who paved that highway??
I relate to this in an everyday context, not just the holiday season.
I wonder how many people ever get to Chapter III and can even say “It’s my fault.”
I finally started noticing I keep doing the same negative habits, that it’s my fault, and that I need to walk down another street. Even so, the daily grind, that certain autopilot, continues to make my motivation less than admirable.
Seeing a poem like this right in front of me almost personifies it. It breaks the pattern by adding perspective and gives me something to think about when I’m ready to knowingly be foolish again. Awesome share!

Thanks for the on-target points, Patrick. You are sooo right–sadly, many don’t ever get to Chapter III and remain stuck.
Love this:
“I finally started noticing I keep doing the same negative habits, that it’s my fault, and that I need to walk down another street. Even so, the daily grind, that certain autopilot, continues to make my motivation less than admirable.”
Isn’t this the greatest poem? I love the simplicity and the profundity.
Thanks for sharing
